New Music - THE POWDER KEGS
This philly folk rock trio is a thrill to listen to. Purely astonishing vocals with trumpets and keyboards (reminiscent of the beach boys in many ways) filling in the background; I hear something new each listen. New EP “Empty Side” dropped a few days ago, the track “La Mariposa” has spectacular spanish lyrics - just in time for cinco de mayo! Check it out aqui.

Island Sounds in the City - MOS DUB
Just when the weather looks to be changing for the better, the cold chilling remnants of winter seem to creep back into the city. It went from 89 degrees to 40 today - so how the hell are people still in disbelief of climate change??? People pa-lease, folks also once believed the world was flat - go read a book. Anyways, at least when the weather isn’t sunny you can find music that can...

Get Hyped Up - NAS & DAMIAN MARLEY
This is every hip hop & ganja lovers dream - two kings of their genres collaborating on an entire album that is sure to be GROUNDBREAKING. Distant Relatives, consisting of the legendary Damian Marley and Nasir Jones (AKA Nas), is scheduled to release a new album May 18th. First impressions had my jaw drop; the chemistry and flow between these two is incredible, and the production is just as...

Video + Tour - STATE RADIO
State Radio was probably like the Green Day of my high-school years; the band that everyone could relate to because you somehow felt that it was your little secret that everyone else had yet to discover. And then I remember hearing “The General” on the radio and being like “F@CK, now who can I take secret ownership of?” Well, my disappointment in their rise to stardom...

New Music - THE BLACK KEYS
The Black Keys have a new album called “Brothers” coming out in May. The first single called “Tighten Up” is produced by the one-and-only Dangermouse (which is insane considering all the projects he’s been involved with so far in 2010 and collaborating with James Mercer to form Broken Bells). The song sounds a lot different than the gritty, deconstructed grunge/rock...

Video Watch - VAMPIRE WEEKEND
OK Go may have some competition for most original music video concepts. The video for Vampire Weekend’s new(ish) single “Cousins” is on par with the synchronized treadmill dance sequence and elaborate “mouse trap” experiment. Vampire Weekend’s previous single “Giving Up the Gun” has a similarly creative video as well. Check em out.

Sunday Slacking - The xx
Today I rebelled against the fading retreat of nice weather we’ve been having by spending most of the day outside with music and a pen. If I were in school, and it weren’t Sunday, I would have felt very much like Farris Bueller - dodging all responsibilities and pursuing fun wherever it can be found. The track that inspired all this (mainly because it reminds me of that “Bow...

Spring Sounds - JUSTICE
Only such a talented duo like Justice could make MGMT sound like a Jackson 5 cover band. This remix of “Electric Feel” is comical at first - with its shrill sounding chorus and a fast-paced beat that seems borderline forced - that is until the thumping bass kicks in, and you notice that you’re tapping your foot and nodding your head without knowing (I’m sure a lot of...

Mashed Up - CROOKERS
Another brilliant hit by these mash-up mix tape magicians Crookers. This song makes me want to learn French (or at least go clubbing there). The track is off the duos new mix tape “Tons of Friends,” which dropped last week. Lots of collaboration on it, Mike Snow and Will.i.am to name a few. Check it out here.

Upcoming Shows - WILCO
Wilco is coming to Boston at the Orpheum in April, but of course it’s sold out unless you wanna pay and arm and a leg. I haven’t listened to their latest album much ingeniously titled “Wilco (the album)” — ain’t nothing wrong with being straight-forward. One track I like the most is a duet featuring Feist called “You and I.” Two great voices...

New EP - CITIZEN COPE
It’s been a while since I’ve listen to Citizen Cope, and his new EP sounds a lot like both a reinvention and an exploration of old sounds. As always, the lyrics paint a very distraught, yet very real picture of hard times and the songs that come out of them. Give a listen, get inspired, do something.

Sunday Spin - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
Every now and then I’ll discover an artist that I have no clue how to describe. Is it disco? Is it new-age punk? Is it simply catchy britpop produced extremely well? If this was a standardized test, the answer would be D) Probably some combination of all the above. Florence + The Machine, who recently won “Best British Album” at the 2010 Brit Awards, has an enticing voice that...

Blogged About - PRETTY GOOD DANCE MOVES
Pretty Good Dance Moves have an addicting new single out called “Leave Me Alone.” It’s blazing a “indietronic” (or whatever other funny-sounding genre you want to call it) trail across the music blog world. Other songs from their upcoming EP can be found here. What I really want to know though is can someone ever dance better than “pretty good” when...

Mashed Up - Hippity Hoppity in the Hood (Internet)
The Hood Internet has done it again. Cranking out some of the best mash-ups of current and recent hits and turning them into listening gold for those keen enough to recognize. Oh and I might mention that they put out nearly two new songs out a week to satisfy all us overstimulated music-junkies. This song has been especially hard for me NOT to listen to at least three times when it comes on the...

Upcoming Release - ANGUS & JULIA STONE
Angus & Julia Stone, a sibling duo from down under, have a new album coming out that should be stateside the end of the month (that would be March for those of you who don’t own a calender). Their myspace page has a few tracks which sound incredible. Reallll gritty and full of life, it’s like a re-release of a digitally enhanced 1950s movie. Check them out, I’ll post an...

SAY WOOORD!!! This group is all about not overdoing their sampling, and actually I would argue making an even better (or at least as good) song from which they’re borrowing. The video is a HOOT as well (that’s right I say hoot, gotta keep words like that alive).

New Music - TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB
Whoa, how did this group slip through my obsessive music-crazed search through the internet? It must be because I’m not part of the Two Door Cinema Club (OK, that fills the daily pun requirement, no more I promise). Taking their lead from french favorites Phoenix (who have coincidentally called upon the group to remix a track for an upcoming re-release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix), this...

Sign Them Now - FOSTER THE PEOPLE
Someone please sign Foster the People, an L.A. group who are making noise all over the blog world. Found by the highly enjoyable blog Absolutely Horrorshow after hearing them on a soundtrack for a fashion release event, this group is unsigned and to my knowledge has yet to release an official EP. Luckily, you can visit their website and get a free download by signing up your email. Look them up...
